My Vegan Review of BFG

You don't have to be vegan to like the BFG. I went with my nonvegan husband and we both enjoyed it. He didn't even catch the animal rights theme until I pointed it out.

Spoilers below.

My fiance and I have been meaning to go to Kama for a while now. They have one in LaGrange Park where we live, so we made reservations for Valentine's Day.

Before dinner we had hoped to go to a local metaphysical store but saw they were closed Sundays. Instead we wound up wandering LaGrange and driving around Hinsdale, looking at beautiful houses we'll probably never be able to afford. Oh well. If I had that kind of money I probably wouldn't spend it on a house anyway.

Goals for 2015

The new year has passed but the calendar date isn't really important to me. Heck, I just sent out my holiday cards a week ago, though I had them in plenty of time for Christmas. So I like to think that I took my time to think about my goals instead of going off half cocked.

I recently bought a copy of the book The Wisdom of Hypatia. One of the dangers of working at Quest Bookshop is that I want to buy everything. But after just reading the back and flipping through it, I knew it was exactly what I wanted.

Black Bean Burgers

Makes about 6 patties

  • 1 15 oz can black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 15 oz can any kind of bean, rinsed and drained
  • Enough veggies to match the volume of the beans
  • Ground oatmeal, 1/2 to 1 cup
  • 4 tablespoons cumin
  • 4 (or more!) tablespoons garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground flax seed
  • 1 tablespoon ground chia seeds
  • Salt/pepper to taste

This is my aunt's recipe. Like all of her recipes, it's very customizable to suit your taste.

Soul Food Layered Bowl

Vegan food doesn't have to be complicated.

Tonight I threw something together based on a delicious meal I had at Native Foods Cafe. Marinated some vegan chicken strips for about 30 seconds in homemade barbecue sauce, then put it in the oven swimming in the sauce at 350. I would have used store bought barbecue if I had any on hand. It probably cooked for about 45 minutes but really, the chicken strips were pre-cooked so it was just heating it anyway.

Dying Possum

Today I woke up in the late afternoon. As a web designer, this is pretty normal. I happened to glance out the window to see a possum in the street. He* was moving around a little bit but didn't leave the street. I waited a little while and then looked out again and found him lying on his side.

False Love

An acquaintance of mine feels a strong spiritual connection to bees. They are a sacred animal for her. She supports work to help curb their diminishing population, and I assume she calls upon them as spirit allies. It's very common in Pagan, shamanic, and other communities to call upon the guidance and protection of animal spirits. When we were discussing veganism, she told me that she could never become fully vegan because honey is very important to her due to her spiritual connection with bees.

Mothers Day 2013

I decided to wake my mom up to brunch. Two trips to the store later, I was busy making a tofu quiche using The Post Punk Kitchen's recipe. Since she's not huge on broccoli I substituted asparagus and a ton of fresh spinach. I had hoped to try out kala namak - Indian black salt - for the first time, but alas, no Indian groceries were open that early on a Sunday. Kala namak is a sulfurous salt that I've heard makes vegan dishes taste eggy. Instead I added asafoetida liberally.

Vegan Propaganda

Just sharing two images I made. I know very little about graphic design, but it's definitely a skill I want to learn. If you like them, feel free to click to open them in a lightbox and download. It's propaganda, so spread it! You may recognize the cow from our header on the homepage. I met her while visiting family in Oklahoma. It was sad to see her and her companions trapped behind fences right next to a gas station, with tags on their ears, but it was a beautiful experience to get so close. They all gathered around the calves to protect them from the strangers.

Veganism and Hedonia

Those Vegan Hedonists is the forum I created to discuss all aspects of veganism, animal rights, spirituality, skepticism, and philosophy.

Hedonism is the philosophical stance that pleasure or happiness is the only intrinsic good. I'd suggest that this idea is the reason many of us became vegan, and the basis of much of the animal rights movement. I contend that ethical hedonism requires veganism. But this blog isn't intended just for vegans. It's a place for everyone to respectfully discuss all manner of ideas and issues.
